Two foreign-made pistols and ammunition have been seized in Tamale alongside suspected narcotics and more than GH¢20,000 in cash during an intelligence-led police operation targeting suspected illicit activities.
The Northern Regional Police Command said five persons were arrested during the operation at the Tamale Aboabo Scraps Area on Monday, September 21, 2026.
The Regional Special Operations Team carried out the operation at about 1130 hours after receiving what the Command described as credible information about suspected illicit activities in the area, which is located near a forested section.
A statement issued by the Command and signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Richard Ackumey, Deputy Northern Regional Crime Officer, said a search of the residence of one of the suspects, Ibrahim Issahaku, 39, resulted in the recovery of the firearms.
The police retrieved two foreign-made pistols, two rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition, a parcel of suspected Indian hemp and GH¢1,880 in cash from the residence.
The operation also led to the seizure of GH¢18,825 concealed inside the motorcycle of another suspect, Kwame Boateng, 28.
The Command said it suspected the money to be proceeds from the sale of narcotic drugs.
Other items recovered included 123 wraps of suspected Indian hemp, 12 sachets of 1mg Rohypnol, seven sachets of 250mg Tramadol and 111 wraps of suspected ashes.
Three motorbikes were also seized during the operation.
The five suspects are Ibrahim Issahaku; Mohamed John, 28; Mohamed Nawas, 25; Mohamed Osman Awal, 41; and Kwame Boateng, 28.
The police identified Mohamed John and Mohamed Nawas as suspected drug users, while Boateng was suspected of being involved in the sale of narcotic substances.
Mohamed Osman Awal, who was identified as the owner of the scrap business at the location, was also alleged to have been harbouring persons suspected of engaging in drug peddling.
The Command said the suspects and exhibits had been taken to the Northern Regional Police Headquarters and subsequently handed over to the Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit.
Investigations are ongoing to establish the source and intended use of the firearms and ammunition, as well as the circumstances surrounding the suspected narcotics and cash recovered during the operation.
