Cornell Students Demand Action as 2024 Sexual Assault Case Reignites Campus Anger

Students at Cornell University are demanding greater transparency and accountability over the institution’s handling of a 2024 sexual assault case, as renewed scrutiny of the matter sparks anger across the campus.

At a student assembly on Thursday, students and faculty members expressed frustration over the university’s response to the allegations, with some calling for changes to how sexual misconduct cases are investigated and communicated.

One undergraduate, Sophia Riley Sim, said students wanted assurances that their safety would take precedence over concerns about the university’s reputation.

“We deserve to know that our institution values our safety more than its reputation,” she said.

Sim said the case had left her so distressed that she had been unable to attend classes during the preceding week.

The controversy centres on allegations involving a former Cornell student, identified in the civil proceedings as Jane Doe, who filed a lawsuit against the university on September 16. She alleges that she was drugged and sexually assaulted at the Chi Phi fraternity house in October 2024 and argues that Cornell failed to adequately protect her or discipline those involved.

Seven men linked to the fraternity have been referred to as the “Cornell Seven” in coverage of the case. No individual has been criminally charged in connection with the allegations to date, according to a Cornell Student Assembly resolution addressing the matter.

The renewed attention has also focused on the university’s internal disciplinary process. Cornell has said its Office of Civil Rights and Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards investigated and adjudicated the allegations. The university has cited federal privacy requirements in explaining why it has not publicly disclosed individual disciplinary outcomes.

Cornell has also said temporary suspensions and other restrictive measures were used during the investigation and that a trained faculty and staff panel heard evidence over multiple days. According to the university, sanctions issued by the panel included expulsions and suspensions.

The Student Assembly, however, says conflicting accounts of the sanctions have contributed to students’ concerns and has proposed greater institutional transparency, including publication of aggregate outcomes from sexual misconduct proceedings and clearer information on how university offices coordinate with law enforcement.

The criminal investigation has also been revived. Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten’s office initially declined to bring charges in November 2024, but announced in September 2026 that it intended to present the case to a grand jury following the filing of the civil lawsuit.

The developments have intensified calls for an independent examination of the case and Cornell’s response, with the university already facing demands from students and faculty for broader reforms around sexual assault prevention, reporting and accountability.

Cornell’s Feminist, Gender and Sexuality Studies programme also issued an open letter on October 1 expressing support for survivors and criticising the university’s disciplinary response to the 2024 case.

The allegations remain contested and have not resulted in criminal convictions. The continuing investigations and legal proceedings are expected to determine the facts surrounding the case.
