The Upper East Regional Police Command has intensified investigations into a suspected illicit drug network following the arrest of a 36-year-old man at Paga in the Kassena-Nankana West District.
The suspect, identified as Tumbana Ane, was arrested during a police operation that led to the seizure of 38 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp at his residence.
The police also recovered other prohibited substances, including Tramadol, during a search of the residence.
According to the Regional Police Command, the discovery has prompted further investigations to establish the full extent of the suspect’s alleged activities and identify other persons who may be connected to the suspected drug trade.
The operation also uncovered a tunnel at the suspect’s residence, which investigators suspect may have been constructed to conceal illicit substances or facilitate escape from law enforcement.
The police have not established conclusively the purpose of the tunnel but said its discovery forms part of the ongoing investigation into the suspect.
In a statement issued on Monday, October 5, the Command said the arrest formed part of efforts to combat the distribution and use of prohibited drugs and other criminal activities in the region.
Preliminary investigations have also allegedly linked Ane to the operation of brothels at an illegal mining site at Wuru, a suburb of the Kayoro community in the Kassena-Nankana West District.
The police are continuing investigations into the allegations and the possible network of individuals associated with the suspect’s activities.
The seized substances are expected to form part of the evidence as investigators work to determine the nature and extent of the suspected criminal operations.
