As Earth Day is observed globally, a recent Afrobarometer survey has revealed that climate change is taking a growing toll on African citizens, with the majority of those aware of the issue saying it is worsening their lives. Africans are calling on both their own governments and wealthier nations to take urgent action to address the crisis and reduce its impact.

The survey, conducted across 28 countries, found that nearly 60% of Africans have heard of climate change. Among those who are aware, a striking 80% reported that climate change is negatively affecting life in their countries. In fact, half of them describe the situation as “much worse.” A majority (65%) of respondents identified human activity as the main cause of climate change, while a smaller number pointed to natural processes.

The survey also highlighted the strong public belief that both national governments and wealthier countries should bear the primary responsibility for tackling climate change. While nearly 40% of Africans believe their own governments should take the lead, 25% think wealthier nations are more responsible.

Africans are advocating for targeted policies and investments to combat the effects of climate change, with widespread support for initiatives such as investing in climate-resilient infrastructure (82%) and pressing wealthier countries to provide more climate aid (77%). There is also broad support for investing in wind and solar energy, even if it means higher costs.

This survey underscores the growing sense of urgency in Africa regarding climate change, as citizens demand that both their governments and rich nations step up efforts to mitigate its effects and support vulnerable communities in the region.
