A district court in Nalerigu has remanded Waliu Fazazi, the prime suspect in a high-stakes mobile money robbery involving GH₵1.3 million, as police intensify efforts to apprehend his accomplices still at large.
Fazazi appeared before the court on Friday, April 25, 2025, in connection with a daring daylight robbery that took place on April 23 in Bunkpurugu, North East Region. The suspect is believed to have masterminded the attack alongside unidentified individuals who are currently on the run.
According to police accounts, Fazazi initially approached the mobile money vendor under the pretense of making a GH₵15,000 withdrawal, citing a delay due to network issues. As the vendor attempted to process the transaction, two masked men—one wielding a firearm—stormed the scene.
The armed assailants fired warning shots and made off with a bag containing GH₵1.3 million before fleeing on a motorbike. Investigators say the entire operation was carefully orchestrated and timed to exploit a moment of distraction.
The court has ordered that Fazazi be held in police custody until his next appearance on May 9, 2025, to assist with ongoing investigations. Police are appealing to the public for any information that could help track down the fugitive suspects.
The brazen nature of the robbery has sparked concerns about the rising threat to mobile money operators in remote communities, prompting calls for enhanced security measures and surveillance in high-cash-handling businesses.
