Residents of Ketu South Call for Immediate Government Action to Combat Rising Tidal Waves

Residents of Salakope and neighboring communities in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region are urgently calling on the government to prioritize the completion of vital sea defense projects in response to the increasingly destructive tidal waves that have been devastating their homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods.

Recent tidal surges have once again ravaged these coastal areas, leaving behind extensive damage. Homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure have been swept away, further escalating the concerns of local residents who feel abandoned by the government in the face of this ongoing crisis. Assembly Member for the Salakope Electoral Area, Mr. Sylvanus Kumawu, voiced his frustration in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, highlighting the lack of concrete government action despite years of promises.

“The tidal waves have torn through our community once again,” Kumawu stated. “This is not the first time, and we are still waiting for the necessary infrastructure to protect us. The government’s failure to follow through on its plans is putting us in grave danger.”

While communities along the coast have long struggled with tidal wave damage, the recent waves have heightened fears of even worse impacts in the near future. Kumawu emphasized that the residents no longer need temporary relief supplies, such as foodstuffs, which were only effective for a few weeks after earlier incidents. “What we need is real action – the continuation and completion of the sea defense walls that have been stalled for years,” he added.

The sea defense project, which was intended to shield coastal communities from tidal surges, has been slow to materialize, with many residents uncertain about the fate of the initiative. After a visit by President John Dramani Mahama and other stakeholders during the previous wave of destruction, there has been little to no visible progress on the ground.

One of the most pressing concerns is the vulnerability of vital infrastructure in the region. Kumawu pointed out that key elements such as the Keta-Aflao road, schools, health facilities, electricity poles, and water pipelines are all at risk. The disruption of these services not only affects the physical well-being of residents but also takes a toll on their mental health as they face the uncertainty of what comes next.

The residents are now urging the government to take swift action to secure their communities. “Our homes are being destroyed by the sea, and relief efforts are no longer enough. We need lasting solutions, not short-term fixes,” said one local resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “If the government continues to ignore our cries, we fear there may be no community left to save.”

The urgency of the situation has sparked widespread concern, with many fearing that further inaction could result in even greater damage to their homes and infrastructure. The government’s response, or lack thereof, will undoubtedly shape the future of these vulnerable communities.

“We are not asking for charity, we are asking for the protection we were promised,” another resident remarked. “If the government does not act now, it will be too late for many of us.”

The growing frustrations of the residents underscore a deeper issue – the need for the government to prioritize long-term solutions to safeguard coastal communities in the face of rising sea levels and unpredictable weather patterns. Without immediate intervention, many fear that the already dire situation could spiral into an irreversible catastrophe.
