Mr. Francis Lamptey, Chief Manager of the Volta Regional Directorate of Ghana Water Limited, was recently honored with a prestigious national award for his exceptional contributions to unionism and public service.
The recognition, presented by former President John Dramani Mahama at the May Day celebrations in Accra, was conferred by the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Ghana.
The award citation, signed by TUC Secretary General Brother Joshua Ansah, lauded Lamptey for his invaluable role as the first Senior Staff Union (SSU) National Divisional Chairman of Ghana Water Limited. His dedication to the union and the water sector earned him a place of honor at the event.
Reflecting on the award, Lamptey humbly attributed his success to hard work and diligence in performing his duties. “I never expected such recognition, but I always believed in doing my best, and the reward comes when you least expect it,” he said in an interview.
He emphasized that his experience had shown him that “people are watching,” and encouraged other workers to actively engage in union activities, which can serve as a catalyst for both personal and collective progress.
Lamptey’s career spans over 24 years in the water sector, where he has held key positions in both management and technical roles. He is a respected member of several professional bodies, including the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE), the International Academy of Project Managers, and the Project Management Institute Global.
His academic background includes a Master of Science degree in Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST), along with post-graduate qualifications in international negotiations and project management.
His career journey has seen him lead various projects across multiple regions, such as Central, Western, and Volta, and serve as the Acting Regional Chief Manager for the Tema Region before assuming his current role in the Volta Region.
Lamptey is particularly passionate about improving water supply infrastructure, especially in underserved areas, and has participated in more than 20 local and international training courses, further honing his expertise.
In addition to his technical skills, Lamptey advocates for continuous professional development, urging employees to seek academic progression in order to stay relevant in the ever-evolving job market. “The world is changing, and we must change with it,” he said. “By investing in our education and staying committed to our work, we can contribute meaningfully to national development.”
As an engineer with a passion for water management, Lamptey’s extensive experience, coupled with his leadership in the public utility sector, underscores his commitment to both the development of his profession and the broader goals of national growth. The award is a fitting recognition of his tireless work and dedication to improving public services in Ghana.
