Accra Has No Shortage of Places to Go. But Is Getting There Holding Us Back?

A great night out can begin with an excited message in the group chat and stall at just one question: how are we getting there, and how are getting home?

There’s always a new restaurant making the rounds on social media, a live music event worth attending, an art exhibition to explore or a friend suggesting somewhere different for the weekend. Yet, how often do these plans actually make it out of the group chat?

Sometimes, the restaurant stays on the list. The catch-up gets pushed to another weekend. Someone suggests meeting across town, and suddenly everyone has a reason why they might not make it.

It’s easy to blame busy schedules or the cost of going out. But perhaps we’re overlooking another factor: the effort of getting there and back.

Think about a Friday evening in Accra. After a long week, someone suggests dinner or drinks, and the idea sounds great. Then come the questions: Where should we meet? How bad will traffic be? How long will it take to get there? And how will everyone get home afterwards?

Before anyone has agreed on a venue, the logistics have become part of the conversation.

Of course, not every postponed plan comes down to transport. Budgets, family responsibilities and personal preferences all play a role. But how easily we move around a city can influence which invitations feel worth accepting and which experiences we keep putting off.

And that raises a bigger question: What good is a city full of experiences if getting to them feels like too much effort?

We often celebrate Accra’s growing food scene, nightlife, entertainment and creative spaces. Yet, we rarely discuss how accessible these experiences feel to the people who want to enjoy them. A great restaurant across town may be worth visiting, but the journey can make it feel further away than it really is.

The joy of being outside isn’t necessarily about expensive outings or elaborate plans. Sometimes, it’s a spontaneous dinner that turns into hours of conversation, a Sunday afternoon somewhere new or finally catching up with friends you’ve been meaning to see.

That’s why convenient movement deserves a bigger place in conversations about city life. Beyond getting people to work and back, transport also helps connect them to the people, places and experiences that make a city worth exploring.

Ride-hailing services such as Bolt are already helping make the city’s experiences more accessible by giving people another way to get to restaurants, meet friends or discover somewhere new. While this does not remove every barrier to going out, it can or makes following through on plans a little easier.

Perhaps it’s time we stopped looking at mobility purely as a transport conversation and started recognising its role in how people experience their cities.

Because Accra’s vibrancy isn’t just about the places it has to offer. It’s about how easily people can get out and enjoy them.
