The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has called for an accelerated construction programme to fast-track work on Phase One of the Suame Interchange Project.
Mr Agbodza said the project had recorded only about five per cent progress, making the current 2028 completion target too distant.
He therefore urged the contractor and other stakeholders to explore ways of undertaking critical components of the project simultaneously to reduce the construction period.
Speaking during an inspection of the project, the Minister said stakeholders now had greater clarity on the scope of work and should use that to increase the pace of construction.
“I can see that we are just 5 percent of the interchange itself. I can understand the reasons for the delay, the rescoping and everything, but now we know what we want to do,” he said.
“Let’s speed up. 2028 is too far for us to do this, so let’s rush some of the things and see what we can do quickly.”
Mr Agbodza acknowledged improvements in the pace of work since his previous inspection but said the interchange remained the major concern.
“I think the speed from where we were the last time is good progress. We are on schedule to hand over that one but everybody knows the biggest problem is the interchange,” he said.
He called for closer coordination among the contractor and other stakeholders to ensure that activities that can be undertaken concurrently are carried out without unnecessary delays.
The Minister said accelerating the interchange component was necessary to improve the overall delivery timeline of the project.
