Akyem Oda Member of Parliament Alexander Akwasi Acquah has called for clarity over Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama’s reported resignation from the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) board.
Mr Acquah’s comments follow Dr Asiama’s disclosure that he resigned from the GoldBod board about five months ago and no longer attends its meetings.
The MP questioned why the resignation had not been publicly known earlier and whether the timing was linked to developments within GoldBod.
In a Facebook post, Mr Acquah wrote: “Who else didn’t know that the Bank of Ghana Governor had resigned from the Board of Goldbod? Am I the only stranger in Jerusalem? Is Governor Asiamah running away from something we don’t know? Tomorrow is indeed pregnant!!!”
Dr Asiama, however, has not linked his resignation to any controversy involving GoldBod.
He explained that the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), requires the Bank of Ghana to be represented on the GoldBod board but does not require the Governor personally to serve on it.
According to him, another Bank of Ghana official of at least director rank can represent the central bank on the board.
“It does not necessarily need the Governor to be there,” Dr Asiama said.
The disclosure comes amid increased scrutiny of GoldBod’s operations and its financial relationship with the central bank.
GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi disclosed in August that the institution had moved away from its previous arrangement under which it received funding from the Bank of Ghana to purchase gold on the central bank’s behalf.
The Bank of Ghana subsequently discontinued its previous financing arrangement with GoldBod, with the government assuming responsibility for funding the programme from July 1, 2026.
Mr Acquah’s comments have therefore brought renewed attention to the circumstances and timing of Dr Asiama’s departure from the GoldBod board.
However, the MP has not provided evidence linking the resignation to wrongdoing, while Dr Asiama has not indicated that his decision was prompted by any dispute or controversy.
The Bank of Ghana remains represented on the GoldBod board despite the Governor’s departure.
