BoG Defends GH¢15.6bn Loss, Insists Operations Remain Unaffected

The Bank of Ghana has moved to reassure the public that its core functions remain intact despite recording a GH¢15.6 billion loss in its 2025 financial accounts, a development that has sparked widespread debate among policymakers and analysts.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV, the Bank’s Director of Communications, Bernard Otabil, framed the discussion around what he described as “policy solvency”—a concept he says is more relevant to central banking than conventional profitability.

Rather than focusing on losses, Otabil urged observers to consider the Bank’s ability to sustain monetary policy operations, including managing inflation and ensuring liquidity in the economy. He explained that available financial data, including cash flow and supporting accounts, indicate that the institution remains fully capable of carrying out its mandate without disruption.

His remarks come at a time of heightened scrutiny over the central bank’s financial position, particularly concerns about negative equity and the broader implications for economic stability. However, Otabil dismissed fears that the losses could weaken the Bank’s effectiveness, arguing that such outcomes are sometimes inevitable when central banks take aggressive steps to stabilise economies during periods of financial stress.

He maintained that the Bank of Ghana’s operational strength should be judged by its ability to implement policy successfully, not by profit margins, stressing that there are no immediate risks to its activities.

The central bank’s response is part of ongoing efforts to clarify its financial standing and shift public attention toward its continued role in safeguarding macroeconomic stability.
