Growing concerns over rising fuel prices could prompt a review of some taxes on petroleum products if pump prices climb beyond a critical threshold, according to the Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Sunday, March 15, 2026, Duncan Amoah indicated that government discussions with petroleum industry players may intensify if the next fuel pricing window pushes pump prices above **GH¢15 per litre**.

The second fuel pricing window begins on **Monday, March 16**, and industry observers are closely watching developments in the petroleum market.

### Tax review likely if prices climb

According to Mr. Amoah, government authorities have already engaged some petroleum service providers as part of efforts to monitor market conditions.

He suggested that if oil marketing companies begin selling fuel at or above the GH¢15 benchmark, it could trigger conversations about reducing or removing certain fuel-related taxes.

One of the levies that could come under review is the **GH¢1 fuel levy**, which industry stakeholders say contributes significantly to the final pump price paid by consumers.

### Global oil tensions influencing local prices

The potential policy discussions come at a time when international crude oil markets are facing renewed uncertainty.

Rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have disrupted supply chains and pushed global oil prices upward, developments that could translate into higher fuel prices in Ghana.

For an import-dependent market like Ghana, fluctuations in global crude prices typically have a direct impact on domestic pump prices.

### Concerns over economic ripple effects

Analysts warn that sustained increases in fuel prices could have broader economic consequences.

Higher fuel costs often lead to increased transportation fares and rising operational costs for businesses, which may ultimately affect the prices of goods and services.

Industry watchers say the government may therefore face pressure to balance revenue from fuel taxes with the need to cushion consumers and businesses from rising energy costs as the new pricing window unfolds.
