An Adentan Circuit Court has handed a 15-year prison sentence to an excavator operator for his role in an armed robbery attack on a woman and her son at Lakeside in Accra.
The convict, Kingsley Abdul Wahab Lawani, 48, was found guilty on five counts of robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery after a full trial.
Prosecutors told the court that the incident occurred on April 27, 2025, at Lakeside Transformer when the complainant, a businesswoman, returned home with her son in an unregistered Honda CRV.
According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Eric Ransford Abban, Lawani and two accomplices—one now deceased and the other still at large—confronted the victims while armed with a pistol.
The attackers fired a warning shot before robbing the woman and her son of their mobile phones and the vehicle’s ignition key.
The victims quickly raised an alarm, attracting attention from people nearby, which led to Lawani’s arrest at the scene together with the firearm used in the robbery.
During the escape attempt, one of his accomplices, Richard Opoku Adjei, sustained injuries and was later pronounced dead at the Police Hospital.
Police investigators also retrieved one empty cartridge and two live rounds from the scene as part of the evidence presented in court.
During investigations, Lawani admitted the offence in his caution statement, and the court subsequently convicted him after hearing the case.
His other accomplice remains at large, with police continuing efforts to apprehend the suspect.
