Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, is heading a high-level security team to Bawku in the Upper East Region to evaluate and address escalating tensions following a violent clash between the youth and law enforcement.
The conflict, which resulted in the death of one person, Fuseini Iddrisu, and left five others—including police and immigration officers—injured, prompted an immediate response. On April 9, 2025, the Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces, managed to restore calm through a joint operation.
However, the situation took another alarming turn on April 10, when agitated youth set fire to the residence of the Member of Parliament for the area, Mahama Ayariga. The attack initially began with stone-throwing before escalating to arson, allegedly in retaliation for the police-involved fatality.
The IGP, alongside his team, will visit the affected families, including the deceased’s relatives and injured personnel. They will also assess the damage to police properties.
The Ghana Police Service reassured the public of their commitment to working with the Armed Forces, local authorities, and other community leaders to ensure lasting peace and security in the region.
