The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has commenced activities for the 2026/2027 academic year, welcoming fresh students to its halls of residence despite an ongoing strike by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA).
Parents and newly admitted students were seen on campus completing hall registration procedures as the university began receiving first-year students, with some halls already attending to new arrivals.
University Relations Officer, Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, said the university had begun implementing its reopening schedule, with fresh students expected to arrive on October 15 and 16, while continuing students are scheduled to report on October 17.
He said lectures were expected to begin on October 19, adding that skeletal staff were providing support to students and parents during the registration process.
“We issued a release yesterday [October 14] that we will start welcoming the freshers to the university from today and tomorrow and then the continuing students will come on October 17. Lectures are supposed to begin on October 19,” he said.
Dr. Bekoe said initial observations suggested that the reopening process was proceeding smoothly, with parents and students arriving on campus and available staff attending to their needs.
“Going around the campus, I think you would have seen that parents are coming, students are coming, and we have skeletal staff who are attending to the parents and the students, particularly the freshmen and women. So far, everything seems to be going well and so we are hoping that it will continue like that,” he added.
The university’s first semester is scheduled to run from October 2026 to February 2027, followed by the second semester from March to June 2027.
The next academic year is expected to begin in September 2027.
KNUST’s reopening comes amid the ongoing GAUA strike, although the university has proceeded with the arrival and registration of students in line with its announced academic calendar.
