Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has dismissed criticism over her casting as Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, insisting that audiences are overlooking a key point: the story is mythology, not historical reconstruction.
Nyong’o, speaking in an interview with Elle, said debates over her role miss the essence of Homer’s ancient epic, which has been reimagined by director Christopher Nolan as a modern, global interpretation of a mythological world.
“Remember, this is a mythological story,” she said, adding that the film’s diverse casting reflects a deliberate creative choice rather than an attempt at historical accuracy.
Her comments come after her casting as Helen of Troy—whose legendary beauty is said to have sparked the Trojan War—triggered intense online debate, including criticism from figures such as Elon Musk, who questioned the decision on cultural and historical grounds.
Nyong’o, however, downplayed the controversy, saying she is not focused on defending the role and believes differing opinions are inevitable regardless of her response.
“I’m very supportive of Chris’s intention with it and the version of this story that he is telling. Our cast is representative of the world,” she said.
She added that being part of the project was an extraordinary experience given its scale and ambition, describing it as an epic narrative reimagined for a modern audience.
The controversy erupted shortly after the casting announcement for the film, which is written and directed by Nolan and features a star-studded ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya and Charlize Theron.
Critics of the casting have argued over historical and cultural representation, while supporters say mythological storytelling allows creative flexibility beyond literal interpretation.
Nolan, who has not publicly responded to the debate, remains one of Hollywood’s most influential filmmakers following the success of Oppenheimer, which earned him multiple Academy Awards.
The Odyssey is scheduled for release in July 2026.
