The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in the Ashanti Region has recorded a major boost in membership, enrolling and renewing over 1.48 million people during its inaugural “King’s Month” campaign held in honour of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The month-long exercise, rolled out in May 2026, focused on expanding coverage under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by encouraging new enrolments and renewals across the region.
The campaign also aligns with national efforts to achieve universal health coverage by improving access to affordable healthcare and increasing active membership on the scheme.
Speaking at a press briefing, the Ashanti Regional Director of the NHIA, Mr. Muniru Muntaka Mohammed, said the Authority registered 51,976 new members while 1,432,198 existing subscribers renewed their policies by the end of May 31, 2026.
He described the outcome as a significant achievement, crediting staff of the NHIA and traditional authorities at the Manhyia Palace for their strong support and coordination during the exercise.
Mr. Mohammed announced that the initiative would now become an annual feature, with every May designated as “King’s Month” in recognition of the Asantehene’s role in national development and public health advocacy.
He added that the programme would continue to be used to strengthen awareness of the NHIS and encourage more residents to remain active on the scheme.
According to him, the success of the campaign demonstrates the potential of community-driven partnerships in expanding healthcare access and sustaining enrolment growth nationwide.
