The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is demanding an account of GH¢49.7 million reportedly allocated for Ghana’s recent evacuation exercise in South Africa, as it prepares to stage a street protest in Accra on Tuesday, November 3.
The demonstration, dubbed the **“Yegyeyɛ Sika Demo,”** is intended to mount pressure on the government and specifically compel the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to provide further explanations on the financial details of the evacuation operation.
The NPP youth wing says it wants clarity on the actual amount spent, how the funds were utilised and whether discrepancies occurred in the financial accounting of the exercise.
The protest is also expected to draw attention to broader concerns about transparency, accountability and the management of public resources under the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
Ahead of the demonstration, Emmanuel Senyo Amekplenu, the NPP Volta Regional Youth Organiser, urged young Ghanaians to join the protest, arguing that citizens must demand explanations whenever questions arise over the use of public funds.
Speaking to Citi News, Amekplenu said the youth wing was leading the campaign to ensure that the government accounted for the money allegedly allocated to the evacuation exercise.
“If it is your money, you will not allow that to happen. If it is your company, you will not allow that to happen to your company,” he said.
He added that the NPP, as a responsible opposition party, was demanding accountability from the Foreign Affairs Minister on behalf of Ghanaians.
“The GH¢49.7 million that was given to Ablakwa, we want to know the true status of that money. Was there any error of transposition? Was there any accounting error in the course of balancing the account? We want to know,” Amekplenu stated.
The youth organiser maintained that the demonstration was part of the party’s broader efforts to hold public officials accountable and demand greater transparency in government expenditure.
Beyond the South Africa evacuation expenditure, the protest is also expected to raise concerns about what the NPP describes as the government’s failure to fulfil some of its campaign promises.
The demonstration adds to the opposition party’s efforts to scrutinise the government’s handling of public finances, with the organisers insisting that the demand for answers over the GH¢49.7 million should not be dismissed as a partisan political exercise.
