Okaikwei Central MP Calls for Greater Transparency and Party Reforms in NPP

Patrick Yaw Boamah, the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, has called for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership to prioritise transparency and internal reforms as the party seeks to recover from its disappointing performance in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on AsaasePa 107.9 FM’s Atumpan on Monday, May 5, Boamah expressed concern that the findings of the Oquaye report—a post-election assessment commissioned to identify the causes of the NPP’s electoral defeat—have not been shared with key party stakeholders, including MPs, grassroots members, and former President Akufo-Addo’s cabinet.

“We have just come out of a humiliating defeat, and we are still in the dark about what went wrong. This lack of communication is frustrating. We should have at least been called to a meeting to discuss the findings and chart a path forward,” Boamah said.

He argued that without a clear understanding of the party’s strategic missteps, it would be difficult to address the root causes of the defeat and rebuild effectively ahead of the next election cycle.

Building Institutional Strength

In addition to calling for greater transparency, Boamah emphasised the need for stronger institutional foundations within the NPP. He criticised the party for lacking a dedicated national headquarters that reflects its status as one of Ghana’s major political forces.

“We can’t call ourselves a big party without a proper national headquarters that reflects our values and history. It’s about more than just buildings; it’s about creating a space where our ideals are nurtured and our future leaders are trained,” he said.

Boamah also called for a more strategic approach to political education and leadership development, pointing to the Danquah Institute as an underutilised resource for shaping the next generation of NPP leaders.

“The Danquah Institute should be central to our party’s educational programmes. We need to ensure that our members truly understand the core principles of the Danquah-Busia tradition, or we risk losing our identity,” he added.

Path to Recovery

Boamah’s comments reflect a growing sense of urgency among NPP members who believe that the party must undergo significant internal reforms to regain public trust and rebuild its political brand.

He concluded by urging the party’s leadership to take a more active role in guiding members and shaping the NPP’s future, warning that without a clear and united direction, the party could struggle to recover from its recent setbacks.
