The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has issued a strong caution to public officials and commentators, urging them to desist from making public remarks that could interfere with its ongoing investigations into former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.
This warning follows recent remarks by Dr. Ransford Gyampo, Acting CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority, which the OSP described as an attempt to cast the investigation as a personal vendetta. The Office noted that such assertions not only risk undermining the credibility of its mandate but also have the potential to derail the broader national effort to combat corruption.
While acknowledging public scrutiny and critique as essential in a democracy, the OSP emphasized that deliberate mischaracterizations and speculative comments about its investigations could compromise its ability to act impartially and independently.
In a significant escalation, the OSP has re-listed Mr. Ofori-Atta as a wanted person and classified him as a fugitive from justice. His name has again been added to the office’s official list of individuals sought in connection with ongoing corruption-related inquiries.
Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng stated at a recent briefing that his office is actively pursuing all available legal avenues to secure the return of the former minister to face charges in Ghana. The allegations span multiple high-profile cases, including the controversial Strategic Mobilisation contract with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the termination of the ECG-BXC deal, financial irregularities surrounding National Cathedral expenditures, the Ambulance procurement contract, and the management of tax refund accounts.
The renewed push for Mr. Ofori-Atta’s accountability signals the OSP’s unwavering determination to pursue suspected corruption at the highest levels of public office—regardless of political sensitivity or status.
The statement reinforces a broader message: public institutions and their leaders are expected to support the integrity of investigative processes, not politicize or undermine them.
