The National Teaching Council has launched an urgent intervention to address Ghana’s growing teacher qualification gap after revealing that more than 42,000 teachers in basic and senior high schools are currently teaching without professional certification.
A nationwide audit by the council found that 12,279 unqualified teachers are working in Senior High Schools, while over 30,000 others are teaching at the basic school level without the required licenses. In response, the council has introduced an 18-week fast-track teacher education programme aimed at helping affected teachers regularise their qualifications and meet legal requirements.
Speaking at a matriculation ceremony in Kumasi, Francis Addai, Director of Licensing and Registration at the NTC, said the programme is being rolled out in partnership with University of Cape Coast, University of Education, Winneba, University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, Valley View University and University for Development Studies. The subsidised programme costs GH₵5,000 for two semesters, with the first batch of about 1,400 teachers expected to complete training in August. Registration for the second cohort opens in June ahead of classes in September.
