The resolution of a long-standing chieftaincy dispute in the Sunyani Traditional Area has been hailed as a key step toward economic growth and local development. Ahmed Ibrahim, Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA), said the return of peace would create a conducive environment for business and facilitate government-led development initiatives in the municipality.
The Minister made the remarks during a courtesy visit by the Sunyani Traditional Council, who expressed appreciation for the Ministry’s role in mediating the dispute between factions aligned with the Paramount Chief and Paramount Queenmother.
Mr Ibrahim explained that the Ministry employed Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms, blending traditional and administrative approaches, to bring the opposing parties together. He noted that both sides had begun implementing a mutually agreed roadmap to sustain peace.
“Traditional authorities are critical partners in governance. Without their cooperation, achieving meaningful development at the local level is difficult,” he said, describing the renewed unity as a positive development for both the government and the people of Sunyani.
The Minister also commended the traditional leadership for prioritising peace and urged continued commitment to the roadmap to ensure lasting harmony.
Speaking on behalf of the traditional authorities, Odeefuor Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II, President of the Sunyani Traditional Council and Paramount Chief, expressed gratitude to the President and the Ministry for intervening in the impasse.
He added that the successful mediation had restored hope and positioned the Sunyani Traditional Area for a more prosperous future. Both the Paramount Chief and Paramount Queenmother pledged to work collaboratively to promote peace and drive development within the area.
