Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has used his 57-year marriage to highlight the importance of commitment in relationships, while condemning the use of physical violence against women.
Speaking to Joy News in Ghana, the celebrated Nigerian actor drew on his decades-long union to make the case for lasting African marriages, arguing that violence against women should never be tolerated or mistaken for strength.
“I have been married for 57 years, and nobody has ever come into my house to say, ‘Oh, Pete, please, stop beating this woman,’” Edochie said.
The actor cited his personal experience as he reflected on the factors that contribute to the longevity of marriages, contrasting his perspective on African unions with relationships involving some Hollywood actors.
Edochie was particularly emphatic that men have no justification for physically assaulting women, dismissing any suggestion that such behaviour demonstrates courage or masculinity.
“There is no point striking a woman, for God’s sake,” he stated.
His remarks place the focus on respect and non-violence as important principles in marriage, with the actor using his own experience to reinforce his position.
Edochie, widely recognised for his contributions to Nollywood, has remained a prominent voice in discussions about relationships, family values and social conduct.
His latest comments underline his belief that a lasting marriage should not be built on intimidation or physical force, but on a commitment to treating one’s partner with dignity and respect.
