Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has cautioned men against entering marriages where they become financially dependent on their wives, arguing that such circumstances can place significant emotional pressure on a man.
Speaking on content creator Bae U Barbie’s podcast, Curiosity Made Me Ask, Edochie said men should strive to remain capable of providing for themselves rather than relying on their spouses for basic needs such as food.
“Don’t pray for your wife to feed you. If you get into such a situation, you’d like to take poison and die,” he said.
Edochie’s remarks centred on his views about financial responsibility and the roles of men and women within marriage. He suggested that being unable to provide for oneself could have a profound effect on a man’s sense of dignity and wellbeing.
The actor also linked his position to his broader perspective on marriage and family leadership, urging men to be conscious of the circumstances they create within their relationships.
Despite the strong reaction his comments may attract, Edochie stood by his position when discussing the issue.
“I will not take it back,” he said.
His comments have since drawn attention to wider conversations about financial responsibilities, independence and expectations between spouses in marriage.
