Security efforts in the Northern Region have scored a major breakthrough as police arrested three men suspected of smuggling weapons into the Savelugu area.
In a statement released by the Police Public Affairs Directorate, the Northern Regional Command confirmed the arrest of Gaba Abdallah Alhassan, Alhassan Abdallah, and Alhassan Abdul Kudus during an intelligence-led operation on May 1, 2025. The suspects were picked up from separate hideouts following weeks of surveillance.
The operation uncovered a significant cache of firearms and ammunition, raising fresh concerns about arms trafficking and its implications for regional security. Among the weapons recovered were an AK-47 rifle, a Sub Machine Gun, a Smith & Wesson SD40 VE pistol, a single-barrel shotgun, two magazines, 15 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, 13 rounds of pistol ammunition, 27 additional rounds, and five BB cartridges.
The suspects are currently in police custody and assisting with ongoing investigations. Authorities have indicated that the trio will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
“This operation underscores our commitment to cracking down on illegal arms and ensuring public safety,” the police said in the statement.
The arrest comes amid heightened national concerns about small arms proliferation and community safety, particularly in northern Ghana where sporadic conflicts and criminal activities have raised alarms in recent years.
