The Savannah Regional Police Command has uncovered a suspected robbery syndicate linked to the theft of GH¢430,000 from two Mobile Money vendors at the Buipe Cattle Market, resulting in the death of three suspects during a police operation.
The robbery, which occurred on June 29, 2026, involved four armed men who allegedly attacked the vendors, fired several shots and fled with the money.
Following the incident, the Inspector-General of Police deployed personnel from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit to support the Savannah Regional Police Command in tracking down the perpetrators.
Police investigations, supported by the Police Intelligence Directorate and the Kintampo Divisional Police Command, led to the arrest of 28-year-old Yacouba Oumar at Soronuase in the Bono East Region on July 23.
According to a police statement, Oumar admitted taking part in the robbery and named Yakubu Seidu alias Baba, Abdulai Aziz Yahaya alias Addo, and Abduli Buipe alias Addo as his accomplices.
He also allegedly told investigators that the gang had been contracted by a cattle trader at the Buipe market, identified as Alhaji Yacouba, also known as Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu, to carry out the operation.
Police raid hideouts
Information obtained from the suspect reportedly led investigators to several locations, including Atebubu, Soronuase, Agogo and Dawadawa, where other members of the suspected syndicate were believed to be hiding.
Police said an operation to apprehend the suspects resulted in an exchange of gunfire.
Three suspects—Yakubu Seidu, Abdulai Aziz Yahaya and Oumaro Amadu—were shot dead during the encounter.
Their bodies have since been deposited at a morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The police also recovered one pump-action gun with five live BB cartridges and a single-barrel gun, which they believe were among the weapons used during the robbery.
Police pursue alleged mastermind
Yacouba Oumar remains in police custody and is assisting investigators as efforts continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the robbery.
The police are also pursuing Alhaji Yacouba, the alleged person who contracted the gang, as well as other individuals suspected of having links to the operation.
The development forms part of ongoing efforts by the police to dismantle organised armed robbery networks operating across the country.
