A police raid aimed at dismantling a suspected drug trafficking network in Dominase, Gomoa East District, turned violent on Wednesday, leaving one civilian dead and three police officers injured.
The operation, part of a broader crackdown on illicit drug trade in the Central Region, escalated when officers of the Ghana Police Service met resistance from individuals suspected to be involved in the illegal activity.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as the confrontation intensified, resulting in the fatal shooting of a civilian believed to be associated with the peddlers. The deceased’s identity remains undisclosed pending family notification.
Three police officers sustained injuries of varying severity during the clash and are currently undergoing treatment at a nearby medical facility, according to police sources.
Residents of Dominase have reported a heavy police presence in the aftermath of the incident, with the area under heightened surveillance as investigations continue.
While the Ghana Police Service has yet to issue an official statement, security experts say the situation highlights the growing risks associated with law enforcement operations in areas plagued by drug-related crime.
Community leaders are calling for calm as the police work to restore order and complete their probe into the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
