Police have launched an investigation into the death of 28-year-old influencer Manjeet Kaur, whose family has alleged that she was abducted and deliberately set on fire, while hospital records point to a different possible cause of her injuries.
Kaur died on August 26 after spending almost two months undergoing treatment for severe burns in a Burns Intensive Care Unit.
Her mother told police that Kaur was allegedly abducted on July 3 by two people known to her, assaulted, tied to a tree and set alight before being abandoned.
She was subsequently rushed to hospital in critical condition and later transferred to a specialist facility for advanced treatment.
Kaur, who had about 146,000 followers on Instagram, reportedly regained consciousness on August 5. Her condition, however, later deteriorated.
A spokesperson for the hospital said she had sustained burns covering approximately 40 to 45 per cent of her body.
However, hospital records reportedly described the nature of the injuries as being consistent with a petroleum gas cylinder leak, a description that differs significantly from the account provided by Kaur’s family.
The conflicting accounts have become a key focus of the investigation as authorities seek to establish how the injuries occurred and what happened to Kaur on the day of the incident.
Following her mother’s complaint, police registered a case involving allegations of kidnapping and murder and commenced investigations.
Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the family’s allegations, the medical findings and the identities of the people named in the complaint.
Police are yet to establish responsibility for Kaur’s death as investigations continue.
The case remains under investigation, with authorities expected to determine whether the burns resulted from an attack as alleged by the family or from an accidental incident consistent with the hospital’s records.
