Residents of Kpanamuuna in the Wa East District say worsening road conditions are choking economic activity and limiting access to essential services, particularly during the rainy season.
Community members argue that the deplorable state of the road linking Kpanamuuna to Wa and nearby market and health centres has deepened hardship in the predominantly farming community. When rains set in, vehicles are unable to access the area, leaving residents effectively cut off.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), opinion leader Naa Mwamkuli Kumbampon Mahama described the road network as the community’s most pressing challenge.
“The situation becomes worse during the rainy season. Movement to other communities becomes nearly impossible,” he said.
According to him, farmers are often forced to sell their produce at very low prices because traders are reluctant to travel on the bad roads. This, he explained, significantly affects household incomes and overall economic wellbeing.
He added that delayed access to healthcare due to transportation challenges has resulted in avoidable deaths. Although residents mobilised resources to build a local health facility to ease their burden, the centre lacks essential medicines and adequate personnel. He appealed to the Wa East District Health Directorate to supply the facility with drugs and post health workers to improve service delivery.
Another resident, Ms. Rashida Ahmadu, lamented that patients are frequently referred to Wa, Busa or Kpaglahi to purchase medicines, causing treatment delays. She also noted that some teachers decline postings to the community because of the poor road network.
The Assembly Member for the area, Mr. Peter Sortro Mwinisiir, acknowledged that while political leaders are aware of the challenges, little progress has been made. He expressed concern that repeated campaign promises to rehabilitate roads and improve infrastructure have not materialised, leaving communities like Kpanamuuna struggling with persistent development setbacks.
