The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) has congratulated Prof. Charles Anum Adams, a Fellow and Past President of the Institution, on his election as President-Elect of the West African Federation of Engineering Organisations (WAFEO), describing it as a major milestone for Ghana’s engineering community.
Prof. Adams was elected at the WAFEO–ECOWAS Inaugural Conference held on June 15, 2026, in Freetown, Sierra Leone. He is expected to assume office in January 2027 for a two-year term, succeeding Liberia’s Dadley Decontee Toe.
GhIE said his election reflects Ghana’s growing influence in engineering leadership, research and regional collaboration across West Africa.
In a statement, GhIE President Ludwig Annang Hesse praised Prof. Adams’ achievement, describing it as a reflection of his outstanding leadership, long service and dedication to advancing engineering excellence.
He said Prof. Adams’ election is not only a personal success but also a proud moment for Ghana and the institution, expressing confidence that his leadership would strengthen WAFEO and promote deeper regional cooperation.
Prof. Adams, a respected civil and transportation engineer, academic and consultant, has over 30 years of experience in engineering practice and education.
He is the Founding Centre Director of the African Centre of Excellence – Regional Transport Research and Education Centre Kumasi (TRECK) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he has contributed significantly to transport research, innovation and capacity building.
He has previously held several international roles, including positions within the Federation of African Engineering Organisations (FAEO), the International Road Federation Road Safety Committee, and the Southern African Transport Conference Technical Committee.
He is also the founder of the Transport Logistics and Smart Cities Network and a member of the Volvo Research and Educational Foundations Researchers Network.
His research focuses on transport systems, road safety, infrastructure management, sustainable mobility, electric transport, and climate-related engineering solutions.
GhIE noted that his election comes at a critical time when Africa is seeking stronger engineering leadership to address infrastructure gaps, climate resilience and regional integration challenges.
The Institution expressed confidence that Prof. Adams will play a key role in strengthening WAFEO, enhancing collaboration among member countries, and advancing sustainable development in the sub-region.
GhIE further wished him success in his new role and assured him of its full support as he prepares to lead the federation into its next phase of engineering innovation and cooperation.
