A severe rainstorm accompanied by heavy winds has caused extensive damage in the Ofosu community of Nkwanta South in the Oti Region, leaving three people injured and displacing numerous residents.
The storm struck unexpectedly on Friday afternoon, creating panic and destruction. The high winds wreaked havoc on infrastructure, including homes and public buildings, with the Ofosu M/A Basic School suffering significant damage. Several classrooms had their roofs torn off, and windows were shattered, rendering parts of the school unusable.
Mr. Christian Ahiavi, the headteacher of Ofosu M/A Basic School, recounted the storm’s impact, describing how the combination of torrential rain and fierce winds devastated the school. He expressed grave concerns for the safety and well-being of students and teachers, highlighting the urgent need for assistance.
“The destruction is overwhelming. Our students and staff are now left without a safe learning environment, and we need immediate intervention to rebuild,” Mr. Ahiavi stated.
He called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Nkwanta South Assembly, and benevolent individuals to support the affected community in recovering from the disaster. The storm has also disrupted essential services, leaving many families without basic necessities and shelter.
Community members are now working together to salvage what remains, but the scale of the damage demands swift and coordinated efforts from both local authorities and relief agencies to restore normalcy.
