Grammy-nominated R&B singer Angie Stone has died at the age of 63 following a tragic car accident in Alabama. Her daughter, Diamond Stone, confirmed the news in an emotional Facebook post, writing, “My mommy is gone.”
The accident occurred early Saturday morning, shortly after Stone had performed. Reports indicate that the van she was traveling in overturned, leading to fatal injuries.
A Legacy in Music
Stone, best known for hits like No More Rain (In This Cloud) and Wish I Didn’t Miss You, was a trailblazer in R&B and hip-hop. She first rose to prominence in the 1970s as part of The Sequence, one of the earliest female hip-hop groups. Their hit Funk You Up became a standout track, reaching No. 15 on Billboard’s Hot Soul Singles chart.
Over her career, she earned three Grammy nominations and left a lasting impact on the music industry. Guy Todd Williams, also known as Rahiem from Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, reflected on her influence, saying, “She left her indelible mark on the music industry, initially as a member of the legendary rap group Sequence.”
Details of the Accident
Williams revealed that nine other passengers were in the van at the time of the crash, but Stone was the only fatality. The Montgomery police are yet to release further details about the incident.
Beyond Music: A Film Career
Stone’s talents extended beyond music—she also made a mark in Hollywood. She appeared in The Hot Chick (2002) alongside Rob Schneider and Rachel McAdams and later starred in The Fighting Temptations (2003) with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Beyoncé.
Family and Tributes
Her daughter, who performs under the name Ladi Diamond, expressed her heartbreak on social media, saying she felt “numb”. Just hours before the accident, she had asked for prayers for their family while traveling.
A spokesperson for Stone stated that her family had traveled to Montgomery, Alabama, and would release more details soon. Fans and fellow musicians have begun paying tribute, mourning the loss of an artist who shaped both hip-hop and R&B.
