Schoolchildren in the Eastern Region have been introduced to practical environmental conservation activities as part of efforts to promote climate awareness and sustainable development.
The programme, led by the African Foundation for Climate Change and Sustainable Development (AFCCSD) in collaboration with the Technology, Development, Education, Leadership and Sustainability (T-DELS) Foundation, forms part of activities under the Green Ghana Initiative aimed at nurturing environmental responsibility among young people.
The initiative focuses on embedding “green values” in students through environmental education, awareness creation, literacy activities, and the development of eco-gardens within schools.
As part of the rollout, students of Konko M/A Junior High School were taken through hands-on tree-planting and nurturing exercises, where they learned practical techniques for growing and maintaining trees in their homes and communities.
Launching the programme, Executive Director of AFCCSD, Mr Francis Aforve, urged students to take personal responsibility in protecting the environment, stressing that individual actions play a crucial role in addressing climate change challenges.
He encouraged the pupils to become active advocates for environmental sustainability and climate action within their communities.
The initiative also included a tree-planting exercise involving students, teachers, and community members, designed to give participants direct experience in environmental conservation practices.
Programme Coordinator of AFCCSD, Mr Mfah Amadu, commended the school and partners for their collaboration, noting that the project reflects the organisation’s broader commitment to climate education among young people.
He added that the programme will be expanded to other schools across the country to broaden its reach and help cultivate a new generation of environmentally conscious citizens.
