Dancehall star admits 2022 claims were “misconstrued,” seeks to mend reputations
Dancehall heavyweight Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., popularly known as Shatta Wale, has formally withdrawn and apologized for explosive allegations he made in 2022 that appeared to link his former manager, Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson (aka Bulldog), to the 2014 murder of music executive Fennec Okyere.
In a signed retraction letter dated April 30, 2025, Shatta Wale admitted that his earlier posts, which sparked a media storm and reopened public debate over the unsolved murder, were not intended to suggest that Bulldog had any involvement in the crime.
“The publications included a statement that I have now come to know was generally misunderstood or misconstrued as Mr. Hanson’s confessions to me that he had a hand in the murder of Fennec Okyere,” the letter reads.
Shatta Wale went further to clarify, “I wish to retract each of the statements in the said series of publications, as I did not mean to say that Mr. Hanson had a hand in the murder of FENNEC OKYERE.”
The apology also extended beyond the murder allegation. The letter acknowledged that the November 2, 2022, social media posts included “statements that imputed immorality or improper social behaviour” to Mr. Hanson and other public figures—statements that the artist now admits were hurtful and misleading.
“I also wish to apologise to Mr. Hanson and all the persons whom my publications… have caused pain, agony, anguish, shame, ridicule, or hatred,” the statement continued.
The retraction marks a significant turn in a public feud that had legal and personal ramifications. While the 2014 murder of Fennec Okyere remains unresolved, this development may ease tensions and remove Bulldog from a cloud of public suspicion that lingered after Shatta Wale’s previous remarks.
