Veteran Ghanaian entertainer Slim Buster has credited the late music icon Geeman with playing a pivotal role in his transition from dancing to a career in music.
Slim Buster said his journey into music began after he performed as a side attraction at one of Geeman’s shows, an encounter that led the veteran entertainer to encourage him to develop his songwriting and composition skills.
Recounting the experience, Slim Buster said Geeman approached him after his performance and asked about his plans for the future.
“He said, ‘Bro, come here.’ So, what would you do after this? I said, I don’t know. He said, ‘You have to add music. You have to put some music together,’” he recalled.
Slim Buster said he initially told Geeman that he had no knowledge of songwriting or music composition, but the veteran offered to personally teach him.
“And I said, well, I don’t know how to write music. I don’t know how to compose. And he said, I’m going to teach you,” he said.
The mentorship subsequently developed into a close friendship, with Slim Buster describing Geeman as his godfather.
He said the lessons he received from Geeman eventually gave him the confidence and skills to pursue music alongside his dancing career.
Geeman, who is now a pastor in the United States, therefore became an important influence in Slim Buster’s evolution from a dancer into a recording artiste.
Slim Buster later travelled to the United Kingdom to study audio engineering after struggling to achieve the highlife sound he wanted with the technology available to him at the time.
After completing his studies, he returned to Ghana and established his own recording studio at Dakuman Junction, where he continued to develop his music career.
