Teachers across Ghana have been encouraged to adopt Artificial Intelligence and remote learning tools as education continues to evolve in response to technology and changing learner needs.

Speaking at the 2026 Annual Conference of the Ghana Association of Teachers of English in Accra, Professor Smile Afua Gavua Dzisi, Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service in charge of Management Services, said the traditional role of teachers as the sole source of knowledge in the classroom had changed.

According to her, modern education now requires teachers to serve more as mentors and guides, helping students develop critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills.

Professor Dzisi noted that technology had made information widely accessible, making it important for teachers to personalise learning and support students to learn at their own pace.

She stressed that digital tools such as computers and internet access were now essential for inclusive and effective education, citing initiatives like the “One Teacher, One Laptop” and “One SHS Student, One Tablet” programmes as key steps in expanding access to technology.

The Deputy Director-General also highlighted the importance of English Language teaching, describing it as central to academic performance across all subjects.

She expressed concern over declining reading habits and gaps in language proficiency, calling for stronger collaboration between teachers, parents and government to address the challenge.

Professor Dzisi further urged parents to play a more active role in learning at home, saying education required a shared effort between schools and families.

The conference brought together teachers, education experts and language coordinators to discuss new trends in teaching and to strengthen the skills of English teachers through practical workshops and training sessions.
