The Tema Regional Police Command has arrested a 52-year-old man with 37 parcels of substances suspected to be Indian hemp during an intelligence-led operation at New York, near Airport Junction.
The suspect, identified as Ibrahim Saani, was arrested at about 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, 2026, after a police team acted on intelligence concerning his alleged activities in the area.
A statement signed by the Head of the Regional Public Affairs Unit, ASP Dede Dzakpasu, said the officers retrieved a bag containing 37 parcels of compressed substances suspected to be Indian hemp, together with a crusher.
The suspect was subsequently taken to the police station with the items retrieved for further investigation.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Saani may have been involved in the distribution of suspected narcotic substances in New York and surrounding communities, according to the police.
The statement further indicated that intelligence gathered by investigators suggested the suspect allegedly pretended to be mentally unwell to conceal his suspected illicit activities.
Police said the seized substances would be submitted for forensic examination to determine their actual composition and support further investigations into the case.
Investigators are also pursuing leads to establish whether other individuals were involved in the suspected drug distribution network.
The police assured that the suspect and any accomplices identified during investigations would be arraigned before court once the investigation is completed.
The arrest forms part of the Tema Regional Police Command’s efforts to tackle suspected narcotics-related activities in the area.
