The Tema Metropolitan Assembly has taken delivery of 10,000 day-old chicks under the government’s ‘Nkoko Nketenkete’ poultry support initiative, as part of efforts to expand local poultry production and reduce reliance on imports.
According to Mr. George Batse, Tema Metropolitan Director of Agriculture, the chicks are currently under the care of designated service providers for a four-week brooding period before they are distributed to approved beneficiaries within the metropolis.
The ‘Nkoko Nketenkete’ programme forms part of a nationwide strategy to cut Ghana’s estimated 400-million-dollar annual chicken import bill while boosting food security and household incomes. Beneficiaries will receive not only birds, but also feed and technical support to ensure sustainability of their poultry enterprises.
Mr. Batse explained that the larger national initiative aims to distribute three million birds to approximately 60,000 households across 276 constituencies. The programme is particularly targeted at women, youth and vulnerable groups to promote economic empowerment and job creation.
In Tema, registered beneficiaries will be supported to establish small-scale poultry ventures, contributing to improved access to affordable protein within the community.
The initiative aligns with the government’s broader Feed Ghana Programme, which seeks to strengthen the local agricultural value chain and enhance food sovereignty.
Mr. Batse has urged residents with valid Ghana Cards to register promptly to benefit from the upcoming distribution exercise.
