The Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, has expressed strong confidence in President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership, commending the administration’s swift strides in economic recovery and commitment to good governance just months after assuming office.
During a courtesy call on President Mahama at the Jubilee House on Friday, the Ya-Na—represented by Naa Bapir Zangbaling-Naa Dr. Jacob Yakubu Mahama—congratulated the President on his electoral victory in the December 2024 general elections and pledged his full support for the government’s national development agenda.
“May your administration’s efforts yield abundant fruit, and may Ghana’s prosperity and development be the lasting legacy of your leadership,” the Ya-Na said in his address. “I offer you my support and collaboration to work together and to build a brighter future for our great nation.”
The traditional ruler praised President Mahama’s proactive governance style, especially his early economic interventions which, he noted, had already begun to bear fruit. In particular, he highlighted the notable stabilization of the Cedi, describing the rapid appreciation against major international currencies as “a remarkable achievement” that signals the government’s firm grip on economic management.
The Ya-Na also applauded the lean structure of President Mahama’s cabinet, emphasizing that the decision to streamline ministerial appointments and reduce the size of the presidential staff exemplifies the administration’s commitment to efficient, resource-conscious governance.
“By reducing redundancy and enhancing productivity, your government is sending a clear message of accountability and results-driven leadership,” he remarked.
Touching on youth development and cultural heritage, the Dagbon Overlord called for stronger collaboration between traditional authorities and government. He stressed the importance of engaging Ghana’s young population and leveraging the country’s rich traditions to drive sustainable development.
“Our traditions and values—like the spirit of Sankofa—hold deep wisdom that can guide modern progress. Let us unite these forces to build a prosperous future for Ghana,” the Ya-Na urged.
He further expressed admiration for the President’s respect for traditional leadership and national values, noting that such a posture fosters unity and trust between the state and chieftaincy institutions.
Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was also present at the meeting, which saw a delegation of paramount chiefs from Dagbon accompany the Ya-Na to express their goodwill and readiness to support President Mahama’s vision for national transformation.
The encounter marks a symbolic alignment between traditional leadership and the current administration, reinforcing the role of chieftaincy in Ghana’s democratic and developmental journey.
