Thirty-seven inmates of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison have taken another step towards professional careers after sitting for the Teacher Licensure Examination as part of efforts to prepare them for productive lives after incarceration.
The inmates, who have completed degree programmes, wrote the examination at the prison facility on Monday, September 14, 2026, under strict supervision.
The Ghana Prisons Service said the initiative forms part of its broader rehabilitation programme, which uses education and skills development to prepare inmates for successful reintegration into society.
According to the Service, two external invigilators supervised the examination, with support from officers of the Ghana Prisons Service.
The participation of the inmates in the professional examination provides an opportunity for those who qualify to pursue careers in teaching and other productive fields after serving their sentences.
The Prisons Service said access to education and professional qualifications could improve the inmates’ prospects of securing sustainable livelihoods upon their release.
It said the initiative reflects its commitment to equipping inmates with knowledge and skills that can support their reformation, rehabilitation and eventual reintegration into their communities.
The Service added that education remained an important component of its efforts to help inmates develop capacities that could enable them to contribute positively to society after completing their sentences.
The examination therefore forms part of the wider rehabilitation process at the Nsawam facility, with the emphasis extending beyond incarceration to preparing inmates for life and employment after release.
