Absa Bank Ghana Ltd has introduced Mobi Tap, an innovative mobile payment application aimed at transforming how small businesses conduct digital transactions across the country. By turning any NFC-enabled smartphone into a secure, contactless payment terminal, Mobi Tap enables merchants to accept payments via card, mobile money, or bank transfer—eliminating the need for extra hardware or complex setups.
At the launch event, Visa’s Country Manager, Mr. Fabrice Konan, highlighted the broader impact of the app, describing it as a powerful tool for economic empowerment that enables entrepreneurs of all sizes to participate more fully in Ghana’s growing digital economy.
Echoing this commitment, Absa’s Executive Director for Retail and Business Banking, Mr. Kobla Nyaletey, emphasized the bank’s dedication to providing accessible and cost-effective financial solutions that simplify business operations. “Mobi Tap puts a secure, all-in-one payment system right into the hands of small business owners using just their mobile phones,” he stated.
The bank’s Head of Payments and Digital Commercialisation, Mr. Claude Agyen Asamoah, noted that the solution removes traditional barriers associated with payment acceptance by offering a straightforward, secure, and flexible alternative hosted entirely on smartphones.
A pilot user shared how Mobi Tap had eased her business activities and improved customer experience, underscoring the app’s user-friendliness and effectiveness even in busy retail environments.
This launch addresses a significant challenge for many small and micro enterprises in Ghana, which continue to rely heavily on cash transactions due to the costs of conventional point-of-sale devices and concerns about digital payment security.
Mobi Tap forms part of Absa Bank’s broader commitment to fostering SME growth through innovation and inclusive financial services. Other initiatives include the Absa SME Loan @10%, a low-interest, collateral-free credit product designed to enhance SME access to funding, and the establishment of the SME Banking Centre in Kumasi, offering entrepreneurs free resources and advisory support.
Through its partnership with the Mastercard Foundation under the Young Africa Works programme, Absa has facilitated over GHS 1.1 billion in SME loans, trained more than 5,700 entrepreneurs, and contributed to the creation of tens of thousands of jobs.
Recognizing the vital role SMEs play in Ghana’s economy—they constitute about 92 percent of businesses and generate approximately 80 percent of employment—Absa Bank’s efforts to boost their digital capabilities and financial inclusion are pivotal to strengthening the country’s economic foundation.
