Ga Residents Threaten to Reconsider NDC Support Over Alleged Marginalisation

Story by: Nii Okpoti Odamtten / Mohammed Faisel Mustapha….

Residents and political stakeholders from the Ga community in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency of the Greater Accra Region have raised concerns over what they describe as the growing dominance of Ewe individuals in key political and administrative positions, warning that the situation could affect the electoral fortunes of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the constituency.

The aggrieved residents argue that despite the significant presence of Ga communities across Dome-Kwabenya and their contributions to the political activities and electoral successes of the NDC, they have not been adequately represented in the distribution of political appointments and leadership positions to satisfy regional balance.

They believe the situation has created an imbalance in the constituency’s political leadership, with key positions allegedly concentrated among individuals from the Ewe ethnic group at the expense of the indigenous Ga community.

The communities identified as having strong Ga traditional and cultural roots include Haatso, Agbogba, Papao, Ablorh Adjei, Abokobi, Kwabenya, Taifa, Dome and Oko, Narhman, among others.

According to one of the concerned political stakeholders, the situation has become a source of growing dissatisfaction among Ga residents, who believe their community deserves a fair share of leadership opportunities in the constituency.

He questioned why several influential positions, including the Member of Parliament, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), among many other political appointments, appeared to be occupied by individuals from the Ewe community.

He maintained that the concern was not an attack on the Ewe people but a demand for fairness, inclusiveness and recognition of the Ga community in the political administration of an area where they also have a significant presence.

“I am a Ga, but I am working for an Ewe person. My wife is Ewe, and I have children with Ewe names. So, I have nothing against the Ewes,” he stated.

He further argued that ethnic background should not become a basis for excluding other communities from political opportunities, stressing that the Ga community must not continue to feel sidelined in decisions concerning the constituency.

The stakeholder also raised concerns about the composition of a team recently selected within the constituency, alleging that the process was manipulated to favour certain individuals and that the resulting leadership structure did not include a single Ga representative.

He said such developments had reinforced perceptions among some Ga members that their community was being deliberately overlooked in the party’s internal political arrangements.

More significantly, the aggrieved residents are warning that the perceived marginalisation could have serious electoral consequences for the NDC if the concerns are not addressed before the next parliamentary election.

They are calling on the party to consider presenting a Ga person as its parliamentary candidate in Dome-Kwabenya, arguing that such a decision would demonstrate the party’s commitment to fair representation and recognise the political interests of the Ga community.

Some aggrieved members also stated that otherwise they will also have no choice but to reconsider their support and align with other Ga folk like, Hon. Nii Kpakpo Addoquaye, NDC assembly man of Haatso or Hon. Mike Nii Nortey Oquaye jnr, NPP Parliamentary Candidate at the 2024 elections.

They insist that their demand is not merely about securing political appointments but ensuring that the Ga community has a meaningful voice in determining the political direction and leadership of the constituency.

The residents have therefore appealed to the NDC national and regional leadership, as well as constituency executives, to take their concerns seriously and initiate discussions aimed at addressing what they consider an imbalance in political representation.

They argue that Dome-Kwabenya is made up of diverse communities and that no single ethnic group should be perceived as having a monopoly over political leadership and opportunities.

The concerns, if left unresolved, could deepen internal divisions within the NDC and undermine grassroots mobilisation in the constituency, particularly as the party prepares for future electoral contests.

The aggrieved Ga residents say they want fairness, recognition and equal opportunities, insisting that their political loyalty should not be taken for granted when their community feels excluded from the leadership structure.

The central message from the concerned residents is that the Ga community must be recognised and adequately represented in Dome-Kwabenya, including having the opportunity to produce the constituency’s next NDC parliamentary candidate.
