Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has called for immediate efforts to restore the original academic calendar for Ghana’s major national examinations, expressing concern over the lingering disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking at the WAEC Distinction Awards ceremony, Mr Iddrisu appealed directly to the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to reinstate the traditional schedules for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
According to the Minister, the delayed restoration of the pre-pandemic timetable continues to hinder the seamless academic progression of students, affecting their timely transition from one educational level to another.
He underscored the broader implications of the current misalignment, noting that it puts Ghana’s academic rhythm out of sync with the rest of the sub-region.
“GES and WAEC must work together to restore an acceptable calendar, one that is in sync with the rest of the West African system,” he emphasized.
Mr Iddrisu’s remarks reflect growing calls from education stakeholders for a return to a consistent and predictable school calendar to safeguard the academic and career pathways of Ghanaian learners.
