Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro has announced his departure for the United States, accusing Brazil’s justice system of being politicised while making an unsubstantiated claim that he was the rightful president-elect despite losing the election to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Mr Bolsonaro made the remarks on Wednesday, saying his decision to leave Brazil was motivated by concerns about what he described as the politicisation of the country’s judicial system.
The senator, however, provided no evidence to support his assertion that he was the legitimate president-elect, despite Lula’s victory.
His comments have brought renewed attention to political tensions in Brazil, where disputes over electoral legitimacy and the role of state institutions have remained sensitive issues.
Mr Bolsonaro’s departure to the United States and his allegations against Brazil’s justice system mark a fresh development in the country’s political debate, although the claims he made about the presidency remain unsupported by evidence.
