A devastating crash involving a VIP passenger bus and a cargo truck on the Accra–Kumasi Highway has reignited public outcry over the deteriorating state of one of Ghana’s busiest transport routes.
The fatal accident occurred on Wednesday, June 25, near Oframase in the Kwahu West Municipality, when the VIP bus, registered GR-2399, collided head-on with a truck carrying flour.
The impact was so severe that several victims were dismembered, with emergency responders describing the scene as horrific.
Survivors, many in critical condition, were rushed to the Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital and other nearby facilities. Officials from the Ghana Police Service’s MTTD and the National Road Safety Authority quickly arrived to manage the situation and clear the highway, which was briefly obstructed by the wreckage.
Although the official death toll has not been confirmed, authorities indicate that identification has been hampered by the extent of the injuries.
In the wake of the tragedy, drivers and passengers have turned their frustration toward government agencies, blaming the poor condition of the highway—especially the deep potholes and uneven road surface—for increasing the likelihood of fatal accidents.
While investigations into the exact cause of the collision continue, the accident has intensified calls for immediate rehabilitation of the Accra–Kumasi Highway and stricter enforcement of road safety regulations.
