Atlantic Lithium Pushes for Lease Term Review Amid Shifting Lithium Market as Parliament Nears Approval

Atlantic Lithium is actively seeking to renegotiate the fiscal terms of its Ewoyaa Lithium Project mining lease in response to the recent downturn in global lithium prices. This move comes just as Ghana’s Parliament prepares to ratify the final stage of the lease, originally granted in October 2023 when lithium prices were significantly higher.

The mining company is in discussions with Ghanaian government officials to adjust the financial and contractual terms to better reflect the current market realities. The aim is to ensure a sustainable balance that benefits both the investors and Ghana’s long-term economic interests.

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, disclosed during a parliamentary session on July 16, 2025, that Cabinet has endorsed negotiations on revising the lease terms before Parliament gives its final approval. He stressed the importance of the Ewoyaa project in generating jobs and stimulating economic development, particularly in Ghana’s Central Region.

Keith Muller, CEO of Atlantic Lithium, emphasized the need for terms that mirror today’s market conditions while safeguarding the project’s ability to create substantial value for shareholders and deliver lasting socio-economic benefits to Ghanaian communities.

“The Project holds immense promise for job creation and local development, and we want to ensure its terms are aligned with the current lithium market landscape,” Muller said.

The Ewoyaa Lithium Project, centered on a spodumene-rich deposit, is poised to become Ghana’s first operational lithium mine and a key player in the country’s green mineral sector. The initiative dovetails with President John Mahama’s broader economic agenda, which prioritizes job creation and the beneficiation of Ghana’s mineral wealth.

Atlantic Lithium has already secured crucial regulatory approvals, including permits from the Environmental Protection Authority and a Mine Operating Permit, clearing the way for financing arrangements and full-scale mine development once Parliament ratifies the lease.

The company also highlighted strong backing from local communities and stakeholders within the project’s catchment area, signaling broad-based support for the project’s ongoing progress.

As negotiations continue, all eyes remain on Ghana’s Parliament to finalize the lease terms that will set the foundation for what could be a landmark development in the nation’s mining sector.
