MTN Ghana is walking a fine line as it works to phase out its legacy 2G and 3G networks while ensuring millions of customers are not excluded from digital services.
At the Digital Africa Summit in Accra, Chief Executive Officer Stephen Blewett revealed that despite the widespread availability of 4G, many Ghanaians still depend on 2G and 3G connections—either because of device limitations or to better manage their data consumption.
“Customers with older phones that don’t support 4G, and others who feel 3G is more economical for their needs, remain on these networks,” Mr. Blewett explained.
He noted that while upgrading spectrum use to 4G and beyond is a priority, affordability of devices remains a stumbling block. “If we push ahead without addressing access to affordable smartphones, we risk widening the digital divide,” he cautioned.
The telecom giant has therefore pledged to adopt a gradual approach, ensuring that vulnerable groups are not left behind in Ghana’s digital transformation journey.
