African Media Leaders Urged to Embrace 5G, AI for Future Competitiveness

African mainstream media managers have been challenged to adopt advanced technologies such as 5G, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and cloud computing to remain competitive in the rapidly changing global communication landscape.

The call was made by Ma Xin, Senior Engineer at the All-Media Business Centre of Huafeng Metrological Media Group, during a 14-day seminar for senior managers of mainstream media from 30 African countries. The training forms part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative to strengthen cooperation and knowledge-sharing among partner nations.

Speaking on “5G Media Usage Scenarios and Key Technologies,” Mr. Ma stressed that traditional media dominance under 2G and 4G has been overtaken by new innovations. He urged African media organisations to rethink content delivery, citing AI-powered applications, live streaming technologies, and cloud-based production systems as essential tools for the industry’s future.

“Mainstream media must innovate and adopt the right technologies to create quality and engaging content. The new era demands speed, stability, and creativity,” he said.

Participants also observed China’s technological breakthrough in livestreaming ultra-high-definition videos from a bullet train moving at 350 kilometres per hour — a world-first unveiled by the China Media Group on the Beijing–Zhangjiakou high-speed railway line.

The seminar, sponsored by China’s Ministry of Commerce and organised by the China Broadcasting International Economic and Technical Cooperation Company, includes modules on integrated media operations, sports video strategy, and redefining storytelling in the AI age.

Officials noted that China’s experience provides lessons for Africa as media outlets seek to adapt to consumer preferences and leverage digital transformation for growth.
