Nigerian music powerhouse Waje has reflected on a past relationship that taught her powerful lessons about emotional boundaries, self-worth, and recognizing red flags early.
Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast, the singer revealed how what began as a seemingly mature and promising relationship gradually turned into a subtle cycle of manipulation and isolation.
According to Waje, her former partner projected charm and maturity in the beginning. But over time, he became distant, evasive, and controlling — often ignoring her calls while insisting she keep their relationship away from friends.
Despite his emotional withdrawal, he occasionally staged grand gestures, including a saxophone-serenaded birthday surprise arranged through her brother, even while refusing to speak directly with her.
“When we eventually spoke, he said he didn’t like that I confided in my friend about us and claimed he preferred privacy,” she recalled. “But that wasn’t privacy — that was isolation.”
Waje now recognizes his behavior as a tactic manipulators use to cut partners off from their support systems.
“People do that so you don’t find out the truth about them,” she said. “Everything he told me about himself was a lie.”
Ultimately, the relationship faded naturally, weighed down by secrecy, emotional distance, and what she describes as intentional deception.
Today, the “I Wish” singer says the experience strengthened her emotional awareness and taught her the importance of transparency, communication, and trusted friendships in healthy relationships.
