Bridging the Gap: Why Science Needs Journalists and Journalists Need Science

The world of science and journalism often exist in parallel, yet their intersection is critical for shaping public understanding and influencing societal change. While scientists meticulously craft research with precise language, statistical nuance, and peer-reviewed rigor, journalists face the opposite challenge: translating these complex findings into clear, concise, and engaging stories for the general public—often under tight deadlines.

This gap between precision and accessibility can sometimes distort scientific information, eroding public trust and diminishing the impact of crucial research. “Science is only as impactful as its communication,” notes Professor Abena Yeboah-Banin of the University of Ghana. She emphasizes that discoveries confined within academia, without effective public dissemination, lose much of their transformative potential—especially in critical areas like urban health.

For journalists, science reporting is both rewarding and challenging. Ama Mensah, a young reporter in Tamale, recalls her first assignment covering a vaccine trial: “I kept writing acronyms I didn’t understand,” she laughs. “But it pushed me to prepare more. In science reporting, preparation is everything.” Peter Yeboah, another journalist, highlights the human side of scientific stories: reporting on water pollution in a rural community revealed the faces and struggles behind the data.

Yet challenges persist. Access to experts is often limited, and some scientists fear misquotation, while institutional bureaucracy can delay vital information. Still, when researchers take the time to explain findings in simple analogies, journalists find themselves equipped to tell more accurate and compelling stories.

Experts urge a collaborative approach. Dr. Charity Binka, Executive Director of WOMEC, stresses that science and health communication is a civic duty: “The media must demystify science, debunk misinformation, and help the public make informed decisions.” She encourages researchers to involve journalists throughout their studies, not just during press briefings, to ensure clarity and accuracy.

Both journalism and academia share a common goal: informing and improving society. Journalists provide the voice; scientists provide the credibility. Bridging their divide requires not only translation of language but also trust, humility, and a commitment to the public good. Together, they can ensure that science doesn’t just exist in labs or journals—it reaches the people it is meant to serve.
